Advancing Women, Peace and Security in Tarmaber Woreda through Advocacy and Community Engagement\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nAs part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening women’s leadership and participation in peacebuilding and decision making processes, Universal Community Development Organization (UCDO) successfully implemented an Advocacy Workshop and Public Awareness Campaign in Debresina Town, Tarmaber Woreda, North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region, in May 2026. The activities were conducted under the project entitled “Enhancing Participation, Representation, and Leadership of Women in Peacebuilding and Decision Making Processes in Tarmaber Woreda”, implemented by UCDO with technical leadership and coordination support from TIMRAN Project Support and financial support from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nThe two complementary interventions were designed to promote awareness and strengthen local commitment toward the adoption and effective implementation of Ethiopia’s Women, Peace and Security (WPS) National Action Plan while enhancing women’s meaningful participation in peacebuilding, governance, and community decision making processes.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nThe advocacy workshop brought together different representatives from government institutions, women led associations, community based organizations, youth groups, traditional and religious leaders, and representatives of persons with disabilities. Through interactive presentations, group discussions, experience sharing sessions, and reflections, participants explored the key pillars of the Women, Peace and Security agenda, women’s leadership in governance and peacebuilding, challenges affecting women’s participation, and the collective responsibilities of local stakeholders in advancing gender responsive peacebuilding initiatives. The workshop strengthened participants’ understanding of the WPS National Action Plan and fostered greater commitment to promoting inclusive governance and sustainable peace at community level.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nBuilding on the workshop outcomes, UCDO organized a public awareness campaign alongside community celebrations in Debresina Town. The campaign engaged women leaders, youth representatives, government stakeholders, community based organizations, traditional leaders, and women representatives from target kebeles. Through public speeches, advocacy messages, community dialogue, and awareness raising activities, the campaign promoted positive attitudes toward women’s leadership and encouraged broader community support for women’s participation in peace and security processes. Key messages emphasized the importance of inclusive decision making, gender equality, peaceful conflict resolution, and the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan at local level.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nTogether, these interventions contributed to increased awareness of women’s rights and leadership roles, strengthened stakeholder collaboration, and enhanced community understanding of the critical role women play in building peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies. The activities also created valuable platforms for dialogue among local institutions, community leaders, women’s groups, youth representatives, and persons with disabilities, reinforcing collective responsibility for advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda within Tarmaber Woreda.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nThrough continued advocacy, partnership, and community engagement, UCDO remains committed to supporting women’s meaningful participation and leadership in peacebuilding and decision making processes, contributing to more inclusive governance and sustainable peace for all.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nEmpowering women to lead in peacebuilding is not only a matter of equality it is a foundation for stronger communities, inclusive governance, and lasting peace.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\n
